Lough Hyne is a marine lake in West Cork near Skibbereen in south west Ireland. This saltwater lake is connected to the sea by rapids and was designated Europe's first marine nature reserve in 1981. It is the only inland saltwater lake in Northern Europe and believed to have been a freshwater lake up to 4000 years ago.It is a treasure house of unusual species such as sea urchins and oysters. Its varied flora and fauna provide ongoing fascination for researchers from both Irish and British Universities. Surrounded by lush woodland, a walk through the forest along the path to the top of the hill overlooking the lake is well worth the effort for the panoramic view provided of the rugged West Cork coastline.
Visitors can swim, dive and kayak on the lake as well as taking guided night swimming with bioluminescent algae.
Visitors are reminded to take care while at the Lough and leave it as they found it.
