The Howling Ridge route was first climbed and named in February 1987 by Con Moriarty, a well known mountaineer and climbing guide from the nearby Gap of Dunloe.
Howling Ridge is regarded as one of Ireland’s finest mountaineering routes, mostly a summer route but as mentioned, originally first climbed by Con Moriarty in winter conditions. The climb itself is about 450m in height gain of climbing/scrambling from the Heavenly Gates (approx. 600m ) to the summit. It has approx. 8 pitches and can be completed in a reported 20mins! to 8 hours but average times from Heavenly GAtes by experienced climbers are in the order of 2-3 hours.
The route on the map below provides the general route and location of the climb. By no means is it to be used for navigation and/or the climb itself.
Guided Climbs can be arranged from a number of guides in the area. See links at the bottom of this page.
