The route which begins and ends at Rathfarnham Castle, goes through Phoenix Park, to travels alongside the Royal Canal from Castleknock train station, all the way to the Grand Canal Dock, where it proceeds to follow the Dodder River en route through Ballsbridge, Donnybrook, Milltown and Bushy Park.
As a straightforward, uninterrupted exercise the ride should take no more than a couple of hours or so to complete, if (and a big IF) one could race down a shared pedestrian/bike path, dodging buggies and crowds of canal/river swimmers along the way. But this one was never plotted out to be a training run or a time trial. No, this one was meant to be a lazy jaunt for a warm summer's day with a generous sprinkling of sightseeing and refreshment stops, which it was and as a result it took the best part of 8 hours to do, complete with tea, lunch, beer and sightseeing stops!
Enjoy at your leisure.
