Coomanaspig Pass scenic viewing spot lies at nearly 300m or 1,000ft between the picture perfect fishing village of Portmagee and Ballinskelligs, Co. Kerry in the south West of Ireland. This pass is one of the highest places in Ireland to be reached by car or bike if your are brave enough. It is a steep mountain pass that isn’t for the faint of heart but those brave enough to reach the top will enjoy views across to the unique Valentia Island and as far as Dingle to the north and Beara to the south.
In Irish, it is 'Coom an Easpag' meaning Valley of the Bishops. The old history of it's name isn't for the faint of heart either. It is said that a woman that lived here gave birth to 7 babies but decided that she did not want them. Her husband carried the babies in a bag to drown them at a nearby cliff when a neighbour stopped him. He first said they were puppies but the neighbour soon found out they were babies. He convinced the husband to return home and take care of the babies. He did and they grew up to become 7 Bishops.
