Daniel O'Connell ‘The Liberator’ was born here at Carhan near Cahersiveen, County Kerry on 6 August 1775 to a wealthy Catholic family. Daniel spent much of his early life with his uncle, Maurice, at Derrynane House near Waterville, Co. Kerry. He was sent to study at Douai in France, became a barrister in 1794 and committed himself to bringing equal rights and religious tolerance to Ireland as a politician.
The Liberator, and also known as The Agitator, The Great Emancipator was the first Catholic to be elected to the British house of parliament in 1800. He was leader of Irish politics in the early 1800's and over 750,000 people turned up to hear him speak at the hill of Tara in 1843.
