Belfast Castle is set on the slopes of Cavehill Country Park, Belfast 400 feet above sea level. Its location provides unobstructed views of the city of Belfast and Belfast Lough. The first Belfast Castle was built by the Normans in the 12th century and a second one was built on the same site in 1611. In 1862, the third Marquis of Donegall, a descendant of the Chichester family, decided to build a new castle within his deer park, situated on the side of Cave Hill in what is now north Belfast. Not only can you have a leisurely walks around the castle gardens, but there are plenty of walks in the nearby Cave Hill Country Park, including an adventure playground for the children.
