Athenry is one of the best surviving medieval walled towns in Ireland. The castle was built around 1240 and the Dominican Abbey was founded in 1241. The town is also well known by virtue of the song 'The Fields of Athenry'. The Medieval walls around Athenry are among the most complete and best preserved in Ireland and still retain a number of the original towers as well as the original North gate.
- To give you an idea what was happening in the world around the time this castle was built, the Mongal hordes under Genghis Khan overran China, Persia and Southern Russia and invaded Eastern Europe and at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314 in Scotland fought for freedom from England.
