Ballinskelligs Abbey was founded as a Priory of the Arroasian Canons of the Order of St. Augustine in 1210 A.D. Since the 6th century, many Monks lived as hermits or small groups in extreme remote places like Skellig Michael but by the 12th Century they had moved closer to nearby communities to take part in religion, education and charity. In 1538 the Abbey fell into disrepair due to the dissolution of the monasteries by the English King Henry V111 and or course due to its proximity to the sea. Today works are ongoing to halt this erosion and preserve the buildings.

Beside the Priory are the remains of a Mac Carthy castle which dates from the 16th century.
